Firstly let me give a reminder of my philosophy covering both my business and personal life.
‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.’

I have been fortunate to have had a career that has given me the overall experience and knowledge of how important it is to appreciate the interdependency across all aspects of a business and between people. I don’t know how my approach will compare with your own culture and environment. However, I welcome your views.

I have heard that success happens when you know you have achieved what you set out to achieve. However, I need to have a clear picture of what success looks like for myself! If I’m resistant to meeting the pre-set criteria of the company then there may be a conflict of priorities on an ethical level.

THE BALANCING ACT: ROI with ROE

ROI (Return On Investments)

ROE (Return on Energy and Enthusiasm)

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

There are two perspectives I have always felt needed to be considered. I have found that there are in many organisations reliance on quantifiable measures to validate success. There is the need to balance the often overlooked qualitative factors.

ROI: Being Efficient

Quantitative: The emphasis on measurement to quantify success requires proof and tangible evidence to ensure actions are taken to satisfy pre-set quantitative measures. However, with the speed of change the measures can soon become outdated, irrelevant and not ‘Fit for Purpose’ in today’s fast-moving times.

ROE: Being Effective

Qualitative: The intangible element and that ‘feel good’ factor varies from individual to individual. Often recognition of minor achievements and producing the results that match or exceed the required outcome. It confirms my contribution is appreciated and valued. It can also encourage creative ideas by giving space to explore options.

‘Fundamental to human contentment is feeling effective.’
Laura Galbraith, Clinical Psychologist
DISRUPTIVE SITUATIONS

Learning how to cope simply means having the ability to deal with challenging situations.

‘Change is inevitable. Stress is manageable. Misery is optional.’

BRIEF SUMMARY:
Here are some examples of my experiences.

19th November 2019

Flying back from working in Poland, I looked out from the small window and gazed through the clouds at the world below. My years of enjoying working in various European countries were coming to an end with the decision to withdraw from the EU on 31st January 2020. So many people had not appreciated what Brexit would mean. In my case not only would I have to complete a 30-page application form to obtain a working visa, I also accepted that there were highly competent people in situ able to replace me. It had been the long-term relationships with my clients that had secured my place on their list of preferred suppliers.

2020 Covid-19

The brakes were slammed on to life as I’d known it. Like so many people from all walks of life, I was not able to conduct my business to provide the revenue my lifestyle had depended upon. To someone like myself who prided themselves on overcoming obstacles along life’s path this experience was very stressful with the helter-skelter of confusion and feeling out of control.

Aftermath

However, this ‘time out’ made me reevaluate what is precious to me. It is a fact that this enforced retreat had an impact on my confidence levels. I felt like a swarm of locusts had caused extensive damage by ravaging the fertile fields of my imagination.

This may sound rather dramatic but best describes how it felt to have lost control of my life! In addition, I had to face personal losses and stare at a blank sheet of paper to plan my future.

Friends & Colleagues

I have always sought to maintain contact with my valued friends and respected colleagues around the world.
