The question sits at the heart of every significant life decision.
Throughout my decades of facilitating change, both in boardrooms across the globe and in the quiet spaces of one-to-one coaching, I’ve observed a fundamental truth: transformation comes whether we invite it or not. The only choice we have is how we meet it.
Two Paths, One Destination
Some of us are jumpers. We see the edge, feel the pull of possibility, and we leap into the unknown with a mix of terror and exhilaration. We don’t wait for perfect conditions or universal approval. We trust that inner knowing, that gut feeling, and we act.
Others wait. Not out of cowardice, but perhaps from caution, from hoping circumstances will shift, from gathering more information, from seeking permission that will never quite come. And then life makes the decision for us. Redundancy. Illness. Loss. A door closing that forces us through another.
Neither path is superior. I’ve travelled both.
The Illusion of Control
Here’s what I’ve learnt: whether you jump or get pushed, you end up in the same place – facing change. The difference lies not in the destination but in how you feel about the journey.
When I founded Prime Objectives at 50, I jumped. I chose to leave corporate security for the uncertainty of entrepreneurship. That sense of agency, of authorship over my own story, sustained me through the challenging early months.
When I lost my husband Colin on 22 December 2020, I was pushed. The life we’d built together, the future we’d imagined, gone. I had to navigate grief whilst making decisions about where and how to live. I didn’t choose that transformation, but I still had to choose how to move through it.
The Power of Intention
What matters the most isn’t whether you jump or get pushed – it’s what you do once you’re airborne.
Do you resist the change, clinging to what was? Or do you open yourself to what might be?
Do you let fear paralyse you? Or do you use it as fuel?
Do you see endings, or do you see beginnings?
Your Flashpoint Moment
You may be standing at a crossroads right now. Perhaps you’ve been there for some time, weighing options, calculating risks, listening to the chorus of voices, both internal and external, telling you what you should do.
My question for you is simple: are you waiting for life to push you, or are you ready to jump?
There’s no wrong answer. But there is an honest one.
The Year of the Snake
We’re living in 2025 – the Year of the Snake in Chinese astrology, a powerful symbol of transformation. As this year draws to a close, I’m reminded that renewal requires shedding what no longer serves us. The snake doesn’t cling to its old skin. It releases it and emerges transformed.
What old skin are you ready to shed?
What version of yourself is waiting to emerge?
Whether you jump or wait to be pushed, transformation is coming. The question is: will you meet it with resistance or with curiosity? With fear or with courage? With regret or with intention?
The choice, as always, is yours.
