It was through that world that I met the interesting Pharaoh Farrukh, a forensic dentist turned fashion designer who is doing exciting things in sustainable fashion. Now, on paper, the two of us shouldn’t necessarily have hit it off quite so well. There’s a significant age gap, very different cultural backgrounds, we’ve had entirely different life paths. And yet, here we are, the most unlikely of friends, laughing and collaborating and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company. 

Pharaoh designed a special outfit for me for a show at Mr Porter on Park Lane in London recently, and what a terrific night that was.

When I found out I’d be wearing baby doll style makeup for the show, I had a little moment. But then I thought, well, why not, and I simply went with it. That’s the only sensible approach. Why not, and then have fun. Most of the other models that evening were around six feet tall. I am, shall we say, considerably more compact, and quite a few decades older than most of them. But I was made to feel completely welcome. The whole evening was so joyful, and joy is always worth showing up for!

I believe that the moment you stop saying yes to new experiences is the moment your life gets a little smaller. And I don’t want a smaller life. I want a big, colourful, surprising one.

Carla and I also talked about my ongoing work as a speaker and facilitator, working with corporations on conflict resolution and navigating change. I also still offer Focus sessions too, which we touched on, and all of it continues to be deeply fulfilling.
